Trego County

Attractions and Recreation

WaKeeney, halfway between Kansas City and Denver is “where your adventure begins”. The area offers a little bit of everything for visitors.  Nearby Cedar Bluff State Park, Reservoir and Wildlife Area is abundant in outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, birding, camping, hiking, biking and boating.  Trego County is considered a hunter’s paradise. Hunters will find some of the best pheasant, quail and dove hunting in the nation. Trego County offers outstanding deer hunting as well – both mule and white-tail deer.  Wild turkey, prairie chicken and waterfowl are also abundant which makes for more great hunting.

The Smoky Valley Scenic Byway passes by Cedar Bluff and features an abundance of colorful wildflowers, picturesque windmills and unique limestone bluffs as well as wonders of the past, such as the Emanuel Lutheran Church, Threshing Machine Canyon, the Smoky Hill Trail/Butterfield’s Overland Despatch, the Wilcox School and the Zion Lutheran Church.
For motor sport enthusiasts, there are stock car races at WaKeeney Speedway and WaKeeney Mini-Speedway offers “kart racing at its best.”  WaKeeney features four city parks, a new water park, the Main Street Nature Trail and Big Creek Recreation, a grass green, nine-hole golf course.

History buffs will enjoy exploring our unique community, such as the 1889 Trego County Courthouse that lost its top, the Western Kansas Saloon & Grill in a restored hardware store and the Trego County Historical Society Museum.  Veterans will discover military history at the Iwo Jima Memorial, the F-14 Tomcat Fighter Jet and the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery.  And for an old-fashioned treat, check out the soda fountain in Gibson Health Mart.

WaKeeney has been known as “the Christmas City of the High Plains” since 1950.  This annual tradition is considered the largest Christmas tree and lighting display between Kansas City and Denver.  The display is lit on the Saturday night following Thanksgiving and remains lit through New Year’s.
