Governor Brownback proclaims June Business Appreciation Month

Gov. Sam Brownback signed a proclamation today declaring June to be Business Appreciation Month. Business Appreciation Month serves as a statewide tribute to Kansas businesses for their contributions to the economy and their communities.

“It’s fantastic that Kansas is once again recognizing June as Business Appreciation Month,” Kansas Commerce Secretary Pat George said. “Our state is enjoying strong job growth and a low unemployment rate thanks to the hard work of Kansas companies. It is important to honor and thank the businesses that create jobs, invest in their communities and enhance the quality of life for Kansans.”

The Business Appreciation Month proclamation follows news of strong private sector job growth in Kansas. The Kansas Department of Labor reported on May 15 that the state gained 16,900 seasonally adjusted private sector jobs during the previous year and that more Kansans are working now than at any point in the state’s history. The state’s unemployment rate is 4.8 percent.

In 2013, Kansas enjoyed a second consecutive year of record business formation. After 15,008 new domestic entity filings in 2012, Kansas had 15,469 new businesses file in 2013, the highest level in the state’s history.

Kansas recently surpassed the region in per capita personal income with a figure of $43,916 versus the six state region average of $42,554. Kansas also outpaced the nation with an increase in per capita personal income of 2.1 percent last year versus the national increase of 1.8 percent.

Team Kansas’ annual Business Appreciation Month Awards ceremony will be held on June 17 in Wichita. Finalists for the awards will be recognized at the event, with the top nominee receiving the Governor’s Award of Excellence, which is the top award given to a business by the state of Kansas. Regional winners and finalists will be announced later this month.
