Commerce Secretary Pat George to participate in Recovery Month celebration at White House

Kansas Commerce Secretary Pat George will participate in a celebration today at the White House for the 25th anniversary of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. The event, which is being hosted by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, will celebrate and honor the millions of individuals in recovery. The Secretary will join other dignitaries in highlighting stories of recovery and offering a message of hope.

“I’m honored and privileged to be invited to take part in this event that highlights the ongoing efforts made to support those suffering from substance use disorders,” George said. “This is a chance to show that recovery is possible for those afflicted with this disease and celebrate the triumphs of those who are recovering.”

Gov. Sam Brownback, Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services Secretary Kari Bruffet and George will participate in a Recovery Month proclamation signing on Sept. 26. The Kansas Mental Health Recovery Month proclamation will celebrate those who are recovering, and will encourage communities and individuals to learn about mental health and substance use disorders and the benefits of prevention, treatment and recovery.

George has been involved in recovery for more than 20 years and serves as vice-chairman of the Valley Hope Association Board of Directors. Valley Hope, which is headquartered in Norton, Kansas, has five centers in the state and 11 additional centers across six different states to help individuals overcome addiction. Valley Hope’s work at the national level was recognized by the organizers of the 25th anniversary of Recovery Month.

Today’s event at the White House will be streamed live on www.WhiteHouse.gov/Live.
