Commerce ranked fifth best state economic development organization

The American Economic Development Institute (AEDI) and Pollina Corporate Real Estate Inc. have ranked the Kansas Department of Commerce as the fifth best state economic development organization in the country. The rankings examined more than 30 factors, including how effective an organization is in creating a pro-business environment, its reliability of funding, size of the organization relative to its impact, retention programs and leadership.

“Commerce enjoys outstanding partnerships with our state’s entrepreneurs, businesses, educational institutions and state and community leaders,” said Kansas Commerce Secretary Pat George. “It’s exciting that this ranking recognizes the success of the great collaborations between the Department and our partners. We look forward to continuing to work with them to keep the Kansas economy growing.”

The state economic development study is limited to factors over which state governments have control and that Pollina’s corporate clients indicated are most important. Pollina weighed all factors based on the requirements of its corporate clients and its three decades of site selection experience.

Kansas also placed fifth in Pollina’s 2014 “Top 10 Pro-Business States” rankings, which were announced in July. That 50-state ranking indicates how well each state has or has not positioned itself to retain and create jobs, as well as sustain America’s middle class.

The “Pro-Business States” study evaluates and ranks states based on 32 factors controlled by state government, including taxes, workforce, education, infrastructure, regulatory environment, economic incentive programs and state economic development efforts.
