Site Selection ranks Kansas fourth in the nation for 2014 economic development projects per capita

The state of Kansas has been ranked fourth in the country for economic development projects per capita in Site Selection magazine’s 2014 rankings. Site Selection has compiled annual economic development rankings since 1978, awarding the Governor’s Cup for most new and expanded facilities. Last year, the magazine ranked Kansas fifth in the nation in its inaugural ranking of new and expanded facilities per capita.

“Inclusion of a second, per capita Governors Cup award gives states with smaller populations the opportunity to be recognized for economic development success along with more populous states that tend to draw higher numbers of capital investors,” said Mark Arend, editor in chief of Site Selection. “By either measure, the states ranking at or near the top are to be commended for fostering business climates that are most conducive to attracting capital investment and creating jobs.”

“These rankings are another indication that Kansas is competitive in economic development both in its region and across the country,” said Kansas Commerce Secretary Pat George. “Our state has an outstanding business environment and a workforce that is second to none. We will continue collaborating with our great partners to ensure that Kansas remains a great place to grow a business and create jobs.”

With 109 new facilities and expansions in 2014, Kansas ranked first in its region for overall new projects and new projects per capita according to Site Selection. In the seven state West North Central region that also includes Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota, Kansas had 37.5 projects for every 1 million in population, compared to a regional average of 24.5 projects.
