Kansas A+ Schools pilot program to begin this week

Teachers and staff from the two schools participating in the Kansas A+ pilot program will take part in professional development training at Emporia State University this week. June 9-11, Hiawatha Elementary and Cheney High School teachers will begin preparing for the A+ pilot program, which is designed to put the arts at the center of the educational model.

The Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission (KCAIC) and the Kansas Alliance for the Arts in Education (KSAAE) selected Hiawatha and Cheney to implement the A+ pilot program for the 2015-2016 school year. The multistate, research-based A+ model supports the development of creative schools and successfully uses the arts as a catalyst for learning. The KCAIC and KSAAE are working with Oklahoma A+ schools, a member of the A+ School National Consortium, in the development of the Kansas pilot project.

“This training is the first step in implementing the proven A+ model in Kansas,” said KCAIC Director Peter Jasso. “The three day course will help instructors with Hiawatha Elementary and Cheney High learn methods of using the arts to enhance and complement their curricula in all subject areas and foster a creative environment for the whole school.”

During the three day training at Emporia State, teachers and staff will establish goals, learn about integrating the arts into their classes and teaching methods, and begin to build a creative environment for collaboration and student centered learning. In addition to this professional development, support and on-site resources will be available for teachers throughout the academic year to help implement the A+ framework.
