New Workforce AID project will train 70 employees for Spirit AeroSystems at WATC

The Kansas Department of Commerce announced today that it is partnering with Spirit AeroSystems, Wichita Area Technical College (WATC) and the Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas to implement a Workforce Aligned with Industry Demand (Workforce AID) project to help train 70 sheet metal assembly employees for Spirit.

“Workforce AID has proven to be a highly effective program for businesses and employees,” said Zoe Gruber, director of workforce training and education for the Kansas Department of Commerce and Kansas Board of Regents. “The project helps participants earn a job by learning skills and earning certifications that are important for Spirit, directly linking education to a job.”

Spirit AeroSystems is experiencing strong demand for workers with sheet metal assembly skills and has announced the need to hire up to 500 such employees. WATC’s Workforce AID sheet metal assembly pilot project will last seven weeks and serve as an employment training pipeline for Spirit. Participants who successfully complete the training will receive college credit, industry credentials and a job with Spirit.
