New Workforce AID program launching at Washburn Tech

Washburn Tech, in cooperation with Caterpillar Work Tools in Wamego, is launching a short-term program to train MIG welders. Weld Now, a project through the Kansas Department of Commerce, connects economic and workforce development under the Workforce AID (Aligned with Industry Demand) initiative.

Beginning in November, Washburn Tech will deliver eight weeks of training that includes hands-on experience in MIG welding. Washburn Tech and Caterpillar’s leadership team have developed curriculum that includes contingent offers of employment for potential applicants. Participants have the opportunity to earn an American Welding Society Sense Level 1 credential, OSHA-10 certification, and 11 college credits. Students will be prepared to begin working at Caterpillar following successful completion of the training.

“This Workforce AID project supports a robust Kansas economy by preparing workers with the skills and credentials required by business,” said Kansas Commerce Interim Secretary Michael Copeland. “We are excited to again partner with Caterpillar Work Tools to continue to develop the workforce Kansas companies need.”

Two recruiting events with opportunities to learn more about a job with Caterpillar will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, and Wednesday, Oct. 21, at Washburn Tech, 5724 Southwest Huntoon Street, Topeka.

Tuition funding from the Kansas Department of Commerce is available only for a limited time to adults who qualify. To determine eligibility and enroll, contact the Manhattan Workforce Center at (785) 539-5691, the Topeka Workforce Center at (785) 235-5627 or visit Cat.Com/Careers. Those interested in participating may also call Washburn Tech’s recruiters at (785) 228-6315.
