George: This is a great win for Kansas City, Kansas

Kansas Commerce Secretary Pat George released the following statement today in response to Google selecting Kansas City, Kan., as the first Google Fiber Community, which was announced at Wyandotte County High School:

“This is a great win for Kansas City, Kansas, to be selected as the first Google Fiber Community. The Brownback Administration has championed greater access to broadband internet for our state. The availability of ultra-high-speed bandwidth will be another tool for the community to use to drive more economic growth in the region.

“I know that KCK is a great place to live. As a Google Fiber Community, more companies and entrepreneurs will find it an even better place to do business.”

Last year, Google launched an initiative called Google Fiber, which will provide communities with Internet access more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have today. Nearly 1,100 communities submitted applications for Google Fiber. Kansas City is the first community where Google intends to provide its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service. Google intends to offer the service beginning in 2012, pending approval by local officials.

Twenty-one other Kansas communities applied to be a part of the initiative, including Arma, Baldwin, Bird, Chanute, Coffeyville, Enterprise, Fort Scott, Galena, Lawrence, Leawood, Lenexa, Lindsborg, Manhattan, Mission, Olathe, Overland Park, Pittsburg, Salina, Shawnee County, Topeka and Wichita.
