Department to sponsor workshop for contractors interested in working with Kansas wind farm industry

The Kansas Department of Commerce, in conjunction with the Advance Manufacturing Institute, the Association of General Contractors, Kansas Contractors Association and the Great Lakes Wind Network, will sponsor a workshop for Kansas contractors interested in learning more and engaging as subcontractors in the growing wind industry sector in Kansas.

“There are four new wind farms in Ford, Gray, Lincoln, Ellsworth and Elk counties that will be built in 2011 and 2012,” said Kansas Commerce Secretary Pat George. “Millions of dollars of construction investment will be forthcoming, and Kansas contractors can definitely benefit from this building activity. We want to provide the industry background and contacts necessary to help our local businesses become a part of this growing and exciting sector.”

WHAT: The Kansas Wind Farm Construction and Logistics Workshop, sponsored by the Department of Commerce; Advanced Manufacturing Institute; Associated General Contractors of Kansas, Great Lakes Wind Network; Kansas Contractors Association; and KANSASWORKS.

WHEN/WHERE: 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Aug. 9, at the Convention Hall, Century II Performing Arts and Convention Center, 225 W. Douglas, Wichita, Kan. 67202.

WORKSHOP TOPICS: Topics to be covered include how to become a part of the wind farm construction chain; a review of upcoming Kansas projects and others in the Kansas pipeline; an overview of available industry opportunities and qualification requirements; the specific components to be constructed and other wind farm construction services requirements; how projects are managed and wind farm developers’ expectations; and potential next steps for interested companies.
