UpWind Solutions Inc., a Medford, Ore., based wind asset management services firm, announced today that it will open a parts and tooling center in Lenexa. Following a comprehensive evaluation of several locations, the Kansas City region was chosen because of the surrounding infrastructure and its proximity to 70 percent of the wind farms coming out of warranty over the next 3-5 years.
“After extensive research, it became clear that Kansas City was the best location for our main distribution center due to the ability to quickly reach so many wind assets throughout the United States, especially the Central and Western regions,” said Peter Wells, chief operating officer, UpWind Solutions.
UpWind has signed a lease for more than 18,700 square feet at 15745 W. 100th Terrace in Lenexa and plans to grow its presence over the next several years. The new facility will house a wide range of spare parts for multiple wind turbine technologies, as well as an engineering center for parts and critical components like gearboxes, generators, blades and transformers.
“We are pleased and excited that UpWind has chosen a Lenexa location for their new distribution facility,” said Blake Schreck, president, Lenexa Economic Development Council. “They provide a critical service to an increasingly important energy sector. We look forward to working with them and are proud to have them in our community.”
The new facility will feature modern inventory storage and management equipment, as well as advanced software. It combines temperature controlled areas for critical components, as well as an area for tooling and equipment used by UpWind Solution’s field technicians. This state-of-the-art facility will provide faster response times to wind project owners for parts.
“I congratulate UpWind Solutions on its move to Lenexa,” said Kansas Commerce Secretary Pat George. “This is great news for Kansas. The state continues to build its reputation as the best place to do business for companies involved in all aspects of the wind industry.”
“The Kansas City Area Development Council and regional advanced energy industry leaders have worked to package and promote the KC region as an ideal location for wind energy companies over the last two years,” said Bob Marcusse, president and CEO, Kansas City Area Development Council. “UpWind’s investment in a new facility and jobs in the KC region validates our efforts and strengthens this new growing industry for our community.”
