The Kansas Department of Commerce today announced Dodge City as the newest member of the Kansas Main Street program, bringing the total number of Kansas Main Street cities to 26.
The Kansas Main Street Program is a self-help technical assistance program that targets preservation and revitalization of historic downtown districts. The program offers management training, consulting, program evaluation, design assistance, business enhancement strategies, incentive dollars, and training opportunities to designated communities of less than 50,000 in population. Communities become designated Main Street cities through a competitive application process.
“I congratulate Dodge City on their designation as a Main Street community,” said Bill Thornton, Secretary of the Kansas Department of Commerce. “Through their application, this community demonstrated the need and ability to implement the Main Street philosophy. We look forward to working with the city as they focus on the revitalization of their downtown.”
Dodge City becomes the first new Main Street community since Holton and Phillipsburg were designated in July 2009.
The Kansas Main Street program is affiliated with the National Main Street Center, which provides technical assistance for designated Main Street cities. Main Street communities are eligible for state Incentives Without Walls funding. The intent of the IWW funding is to create or stimulate private investment in designated Kansas Main Street downtown areas.
