Commerce awarded grant from U.S. Department of Labor to build workforce database

The United States Department of Labor has announced that it has awarded a grant of $1,156,117 to the Kansas Department of Commerce to create a secure longitudinal data system. The database will expand and improve the state longitudinal data system, promoting responsible and legal data sharing in order to provide performance reporting and research for program improvement.

“It’s great news for Kansas that we will be able to construct this data system,” Kansas Commerce Secretary Pat George said. “This will help Commerce and other agencies improve the programs and support that the state provides to workers, ensuring that our state has a skilled workforce whose needs are met. The data system will benefit both Kansas workers and the businesses that rely upon their skills.”

Objectives in building the database include matching education data with workforce data; improving the quality of workforce data to avoid duplication in collection; using the data for evaluation of federal and state supported job training programs; and providing user-friendly information that will assist workers in the selection of training programs.

The Department will administer the grant in close cooperation with the Kansas Department of Labor, the Kansas Board of Regents and the Kansas State Department of Education. With the assistance of these partners, wage earnings data will be used to assess program outcomes, and career and technical education programs will be marketed to workers receiving unemployment insurance.

Kansas was one of only six states to receive funding for this project. For a complete list of grantees, visit
