Attractions and Recreation

Decatur County Hunting is among the region’s top seasonal hunting areas with excellent populations of the ring-necked pheasant, dove, wild turkey, mule and white-tailed deer. Sappa Park, located a mile east of the Oberlin city limits, is an expansive area for wildlife and natural vegetation which has some acreage allotted for walk-in hunting. The park is used throughout the year for picnics, RV and primitive camping, hiking and biking on nine different trails. The park also offers a new disc golf course, wetlands near the 1930s shelter house and a small fishing pond. Adjoining the park is a separate nine-hole grass green golf course and nearby is an area used by the Oberlin Gun Club for numerous shooting events.

Oberlin’s downtown business district features many unique antique stores. The newest addition to the community is a new area housing a digital 110-seat cinema and six-lane bowling alley. Also situated downtown is the Landmark Inn Bed and Breakfast and the Decatur County Last Indian Raid Museum. The museum has more than 15 out buildings depicting the early settlement of the county in the late 1800’s. A thorough accounting of the Last Indian Raid on Kansas soil that occurred in Decatur and Rawlins counties in 1878 is available, bringing to life the historic event through the eyes of early settlers who lived through the massacre.
