Attractions and Recreation

La Crosse is home to four unique museums. The Kansas Barbed Wire Museum, illustrates the history and legend of the “Devil’s Rope” with over 2,000 varieties of fencing wire. Rush County Historical Museum is housed in the original Timken Santa Fe Railroad Depot and displays artifacts of interest to the history of the area. Nekoma Bank Museum is the original wood frame bank building moved from Nekoma. It is currently being developed into a museum of rural banking. Housed in a native stone house, the Post Rock Museum includes an authentic stone quarry recreation showing the methods used to cut posts for fencing as well as tools and items depicting the history of the post rock unique to this region. 
 
McCracken is home to the McCracken Historical Museum. Located in the former city jail, the museum displays several items about the history of McCracken as well as a display of items from the movie “Paper Moon” which was filmed in the area. Bison Community Museum is located in the community building in Bison. This museum features several displays of artifacts that offer a glimpse into Bison’s early history.

For those seeking outdoor opportunities, there are two nine-hole sand green golf courses in the county, La Crosse Country Club and the McCracken Municipal Golf Course. Stone Lake, located about 2 miles from La Crosse, is open for fishing and small water craft. There are also numerous walk-in hunting locations throughout the county.
