Attractions and Recreation

Scott State Park is an ideal setting for hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, boating and swimming. The unique 1,020 acre park boasts natural springs, deep wooded canyons and craggy bluffs. The park also surrounds the 115 acre Scott State Fishing Lake. Here you’ll find crappie, largemouth bass, bluegill and channel catfish along with a few other species. Also within the boundaries of Scott State Park is the El Quartelejo pueblo ruins. This is the only Indian pueblo discovered in Kansas and the northernmost pueblo in North America. These ruins have been designated a National Historic Landmark Site.

Monument Rocks, located 25 miles north of Scott City, are often referred to as the Chalk Pyramids. These 70 foot tall chalk formations were created 80 million years ago when this area was part of a vast inland sea. They are considered a National Natural Landmark. Visit the last Indian battle site in Kansas at Battle Canyon. This location has been designated a State and National historic site.

If you enjoy museums, don’t miss the El Quartelejo Museum. This museum focuses on local interests including Monument Rocks, the area’s fossil history and a replica of the El Quartelejo pueblo which was built nearby in the 1600s. The Jerry Thomas Gallery and Collection features artwork from artist Jerry Thomas.

Scott City also features Scott Community Golf Course, Scott City Municipal Airport and great hunting for pheasant, prairie dogs and white-tail and mule deer.
