Attractions and Recreation

If you are fan of the outdoors, Washington county has three golf courses scattered throughout the county that are open to the public, two of which are sand courses.  There is a Nature Trail, the Griswold Wildlife Area, near Haddam, and a trail around the Washington City Park. Washington State Fishing Lake is a 65 acre lake surrounded by walk-in hunting areas. There are several guided hunt operators and also camp grounds, picnic areas and RV parks in the area.  The Washington County Speedway features the Jayhusker Racing circuit over the summer. 
Some of our historical sites include: Hollenberg Pony Express Station, several historical community museums and several of President Roosevelt's WPA Projects. Other attractions in the county include the LCL Buffalo Ranch, Herr’s Memory Lane Museum, (a collection of over 100 vintage vehicles) and the Marcon Pie factory.  

Washington county has several community events scheduled throughout the year including the Washington Rodeo, Washington County 4-H Fair, the Pony Express festival at Hanover, Lighted Horse Parade in Barnes, Hanover Days of ’49 and many more.
